Some bands burst onto the scene before they’ve even had the chance to get in any proper amount of practice. Be Your Own Pet’s PR was all about how they were 17 and had been signed after their first ever gig, which was represented in their sound. Three years isn’t a huge amount of time, but in the music industry it’s a lifetime – it’s was only 2007 that Peter Kay was top of the charts with his take on the already annoying ‘500 miles’, ensuring another generation is condemning to having to watch their family dance to the commercial radio classic at weddings. Around a similar time, London foursome Electrcity in Our Homes were getting together, but it’s only relatively recently they’ve started to get the acclaim that their sound rightly deserves – 7″ singles have been selling out almost as quickly as they’ve been printed, whilst reviewers have quickly been running out of superlatives for them.
The limited slivers of songs available on the internet show the breadth of their talent – ‘Hooves’ sounds like Liars doing a Josef K cover, ‘Don’t you want to? (follow)’ takes The Futureheads bluster and paints it black whilst their version of Beach Boys’ ‘Little Honda’ (entitled ‘Motorcycle’) could scarcely be further from the original. There’s a definite dark edge to their sound, and the less twee-elements of C86 are where much of their sound comes from. They may be minimalist, but it takes nothing away from the noise they make, which is something close to a revolution compared to many bands. A compilation of their singles has been put out on Parlour, and considering that today is Record Store Day, you should probably get yourself it. if you can’t be bothered to leave the house, here it is online: http://parlourrecords.bigcartel.com/product/electricity-in-our-homes

If you’re in or around the Manchester region, then you’re in luck. The band are playing the monthly night ‘Some Drum I would Never Hear’ at the unusually named An Outlet coffeehouse on Dale Street. Not only that, Eleanor Lou will be carrying on her residency and the brilliant Boy or Bison should be opening up events. If you’re interested, get down on Saturday May 1st – it’ll act as the perfect warm up to Sounds from the Other City the day after.
