Whilst we all get older, it seems that the musical prodigies never will. Whilst you’re getting to grips with your slowly sagging skin, the extra inches on your waistline and the worry lines that appear every time you look in the mirror, 19 year old LA kid Alex Jacob spends his time making solo pop ditties that have touched the heart of pretty much every influential website editor on the internet. Within a week of having a MySpace profile, Jacob found his work as Therapies Son on Stereogum, and transparent weren’t far behind in tripping over themselves to offer to release an EP.
As the hype suggests, his work is far above the standard of his contemporaries. If Perfume Genius stopped hammering out absolutely harrowing odes and took to wearing a jaunty hat, this might be what he’d come up with, masterful snippets of the bizarre and brilliant. It feels distorted and warped, simultaneously being played slightly too fast and slightly too slow, an uneasy juxtaposition that just about works. It might not pull on your heartstrings quite so heavily, but there’s a world of invention in amongst every track that defies the fact that this is a one man set-up. Oh, and he’s yet to play a show, too. The first will be playing is rumoured to be one of the hottest opening slots at the industry’s biggest yearly event. If that doesn’t make you mourn your wasted youth, then nothing will.
