Nathan of Wavves might have pretty much sold out, but it’s nice to see that the trail he blazed for stoners who dabble in noise pop hasn’t completely gone cold. Makeout Videotape come from Vancouver and make the kind of cold, distant take on surf rock that you’d imagine the region might produce. far from the sun drenched tracks of their U.S. west coast forerunners, the duo take the genre and make it ghostly and weird, retaining all of the melody and energy but none of the heat.
The production values are obviously low, the focus more on vibe than any kind of regard for fidelity, but that’s always forgiveable when the tunes are as simple and brilliant as this. the merchandise machine is already clicking into gear behind them, with their first pressing on t-shirts already up for sale alongside the various CD-R releases they’ve churned out. They might have missed the boat slightly for the lo-fi garage goldrush, but with their predecessors more desperate to be the new Blink 182 than to make exciting music, there might just be a gap for them yet.
