Everyone loves a good product launch – you only need to take a look at the recent reaction to the news of an updated iPad to see just how made the internet can go when it’s done right, springing from nothing to ubiquity in the space of a few days. It used to be that commerce would follow art, but it seems that it might be the other way around now, with bands feeling that they need to make a big splash when they first arrive upon the scene – it’d certainly explain the reason why Liverpool band Outfit have popped up out of nowhere, image and sound fully formed, ready to plug in a play straight off the shelf.
So far, they’ve played one show with Les Savy Fav, got themselves a Facebook page and the now seemingly compulsory official site made up of nothing more than spooky video snippets and sampled noise. There are two songs up through the soundcloud, with ‘Killer’ being the less imaginative of the two, sounding somewhere between a mediocre Of Montreal song and a Mystery Jets album track, only just being good enough to justify a full listen. However, it’s ‘Every night I dress up as you’ that really grips hold of you – weird from the offset with haunting synth work descending into a more of a standard pop number, never really managing to escape the spooky feeling that lurks in it’s corners. If Hurts have managed to make a career out of the shit that they peddle, imagine how big these guys could be.

Every band has a website… you even have one that’s essentially a vehicle for your own opinions. Theirs links to their facebook so you can find out when they’re playing, or listen to some songs. What’s wrong with that?
Surely musical proficiency is something to be lauded, not ashamed of. If they weren’t ready to play, played with their heads down and made a ton of mistakes, would this make the experience more authentic, and therefore enjoyable for you? Well worn “punk” clichés like this are just boring and lazy. It’s sneering A level journalism.
I thought they were good. You should let them off for having a website and being able to play.
Personally I prefer Hurts.
There’s no accounting for my shit taste.
Wouldn’t it be so much COOLER if everything was totally shit-gaze and witch-hauz amirite?!
