A lot of things have changed since March 2010, but the essential narrative has stayed the same: the world is still being ravaged by a global recession, life is still largely terrible and D/R/U/G/S keeps absolutely tearing it apart at every given opportunity. That aforementioned date was the first time Callum Wright’s project had been noted on these pages, a tip stolen from the ever excellent Jamila at Fucking Dance (which, as things would have it, is one of the things that has changed, it now being Cruel Rhythm).
Back then, live sets were as a two piece, now it’s just Cal on his own – stripped down, but without losing a jot of the all-encompassing sound that quickly elevated D/R/U/G/S above and beyond anything else in Manchester at the time. Love/Lust came out on 12″ and sold out, so it’s no surprise that there’s another on the way, the only hock perhaps that it’s taken so long. Connected, though, has been worth that wait, starting out tetchy before travelling through early house sounds and ending up at a who-gives-a-fuck party. Sublime.
