It’s a sad sad fact that most of my favourite bands have split up – The Smiths, Forward Russia, Death from Above 1979 and, back in the day The Libertines have all decided to call it a day (in the case of The Smiths, this was before I was born). But there are newer bands that I’ve only recently got into that are already resting in piece. First up are Icelandic, teen-angst gods Jakobinarina. Making the kind of music that gives your body spasms of happiness, they decided to go their seperate ways after one solitary album, The First Crusade. And what an album it was – full of angular guitars and lyrics about being 17 written in broken English (which somehow made it much more poignant). If you can, then I heavily suggest you acquire it. And if not, then here’s His lyrics are disastrous (though I could’ve just as easily linked to This is an Advertisement, the band’s critcism of the world’s sellouts). Yes, their haircuts are ridiculous and so is the dancing, but my god, doesn’t it make you want to be 17 and angry at the world again?
P.S. If you can’t afford their album, then download Jakobinarina – The First Crusade here.
Help she can’t Swim are a band that feature anger just as heavily in their work, but have much more focus. Which may or may not be a bad thing. Either way, they split up earlier this year and feature some of the rawest music I’ve heard in a long while. What makes me sadest is that I am almost certain I had the chance to see them support Test Icicles, but I couldn’t get tickets and the tout outside was asking £30 a ticket… for Test Icicles. In retrospect I should’ve paid, then I might’ve heard Bunty vs Beano live, one of the most incisive tracks about male/female relationships I’ve ever heard. Particularly the refrain ‘He wants to meet a nice girl to bear him kids/he wants to meet a nice girl to be his bitch/mother in the kitchen, whore in the bedroom’, which I think is an amazingly precise description of what most men fantasize. (Let’s make this clear, I am not a pervert, okay? Okay.)
