After posting two bands that you might like the sound of but I didn’t really like, I thought it best if I return to talking about bands that actually make me feel happy and nice, and make me want to write about them. Seeing as today is Saturday and most people are doing real things with real people, what better way to spend it than watching football on mute and listening to Je Suis Animal.
These guys definitely fit into the ‘awesome band name’ category that Mouthful of Bees came under. The two, however, sound pretty much like polar opposites. Je Suis Animal make dreamy pop that is typical of their scandanavian roots. Having listened to a fair bit of Múm over the last couple of days, it’s only fair to make favourable comparisons between the two – though it’s pretty obvious which of the two is the more experimental.
That’s not to say Je Suis… are not a strange band – they very much are. They combine twee, shoegaze and pop with minimal effort, making one of the most memorable albums I’ve heard in the last year. If you’ve heard Sad day for Puppets, you might know what to expect but honestly, this is the kind of thing that you’d be only too happy to completely immerse yourself in. Or maybe I just really like Scandanavian pop.
Here’s my favourites from the album:
