I love support bands. They make my life worthwhile, set me onto new bands and generally make everything okay. Sometimes, I go to gigs just for the support and then go home, such is my enjoyment of them. of course, on those occassions I always know the support band and like them already. i’m not that weird.
Anyway, The Middle Ones are one of my favourite support bands that I have seen. But you’d kind of expect some quality support from a Parenthetical Girls tour that’s been managed by Gareth from Los Campesinos. They teamed up with the brilliantly talented Mat Riverie to create a kind of pre-(girls) supergroup, which was a joy to watch. They consist of Anna – Grace, who are both multi-instrumentalist wonders, and their sound owes a lot to the anti-folk scene, which is always a good thing.
If you like your music folksy, poppy and personal, these are definitely for you. It’s a pity that they only really play in the Norwich area, despite pleas from me to come back to Manchester for a gig or two. I haven’t given up hope yet, so hopefully they’ll be playing the big smoke sometime soon. Either way, their lyrics are pretty much certain to make you smile, and their music is filled with charm and inspiration. Here’s some of their stuff, and their myspace appears to have been recently updated with some more songs:
