I saw Jamila from Fucking Dance promoting a gig the other day featuring Swanton Bombs. If you’ve not heard before, these are the guys that are going to be supporting Girls on their UK tour, which is as awesome a double header as you’re ever likely to come across, really. They’ve been playing in and around London for quite some time now, but they’re starting to get some press – and they’ll certainly go down wwell with the Girls crowds throughout europe.
Their album Smoke over Swanton is available for free from their myspace (and by a link below this article if that’s too much work for you), and it’s well worth downloading. At their best, they sound like Death from Above 1979’s illegitimate baby, all fuzzy rhythms and pounding beats, seeming to run on pure adrenaline. The stripped-down drive of Perhaps I thought you’d never change is a particular highlight. But the band aren’t afraid to slow it down from time to time, as songs like Belly show and Rapton Park show, bringing in an element that some might call jazzy to the proceedings.
If you’re not into Girls, it’s worth grabbing a ticket just to see these guys. If you’re not into Swanton Bombs, then it’s worth going just to see Girls. There really can be no excuse not to go. Though saying that, I won’t be, because I’ve just wasted all my money on Julian Plenti tickets. See you there instead. Hopefully I’ll get a job soon and see you at both, but for the meantime, here’s a link to Swanton Bomb’s Smoke over Swanton. It is excellent.
