La Roux is an inspiration for us all. Top of the Tops isn’t around anymore, but if it was, she’d be strutting around the set with her peculiar face and made-up hairstyle and singing her songs to crowds of cheering teenage girls whilst her mother stood in the wings with her outfit from The Bill on, crying. And all of us fictional viewers at home would sit back and think ‘That was bloody terrible’. But more importantly, we’d think ‘If she can do, then anyone can’.
Anyway, if this electro-wave is destined to stick around for more than one summer, then one band who should certainly be taking advantage of the 80’s revival is New Cross Quintet My Tiger My Timing. Not content with having one of the best names in music today, they’ve also got some of the poppiest synth-inspired indie sounds around. They must be a DJ’s dream, and remixes of their (admittedly few) tracks are in relative abundance. What’s more, they’re not terrible re-hashes either – they’re pretty awesome interpretations of already enjoyable tracks. The Portmanteau remix linked below probably even trumps the original – though both make feel like dancing. Such are the times we’re living in. The band have a lot more depth than the people who brought us In for the Kill, and hopefully that means that we won’t have to deal with listening to our mothers hum I am the Sound around the kitchen in summer 2010. But don’t bet against it.
