Yesterday I interview Gareth from Los Campesinos, Copy Haho and Sparky Deathcap ahead of them playing Manchester’s Deaf Institute. The transcripts of them will be posted elsewhere, but, because this blog is basically stealing other people’s recommendations anyway, it would be fun if I asked the bands themselves for their tips for the future which both saves me on working hard and means that you actually get some decent musical advice, instead of me republishing press releases. Anyway, I might as well start off with one of Gareth’s suggestions: Perfume Genius
What Gareth had to say:
A record by a guy called Perfume Genius will be out next year on the same record label as the Girls album. I’ve plugged him a fair bit on the blog – his name’s Mike and he’s from Seattle and he’s the most haunting talented, like all piano written songs, really beautiful and I think his record his going to be amazing. i’ve heard all the songs in demo form and they’re incredible, so I think that’s going to be amazing
Well, what to say? If you’re a fan of the less electro songs of Xiu Xiu (think Fabulous Muscles rather than Boy Soprano) or even Jamie Stewart’s other project, Former Ghosts, and you won’t be far wrong. Tracking information down information is a slippery business, but Perfume Genius is certainly a very talented man. His songs are aching beautiful and slightly depressing, depending on your mood. Incredibly touching and fragile, his debut is certainly one to look out for.
Do the broken records is about 6 months ahead of me here, so hop on over there to get a couple of demo tracks that used to be on Perfume Genius’ myspace. My personal favourite is ‘Look out, Look out’, by the way.
