Be Your Own Pet had a ridiculous amount of hype around them for what they were. Yes, they were fresh, young and exctremely exciting, but in essence they were simply an extremely effective pop-punk band who made good songs about getting drunk and parties and not really caring about anything. After the first album, the wheels started to fall off a little bit – one of the band left shortly after it’s release and, following fairly limited support of their second album, Get Awkward, they decided to go their seperate ways. Two of the band are now in Turbo Fruits, amongst other outfits former members are a part of. Jemina Pearl, the feisty lead singer is a part of many acts, but she’s also doing some solo work.
Well, not really solo. Long time fan Thurston Moore apparently popped in and helped a bit, and Iggy Pop probably added a bit more to his retirement fund with his appearance on the album along with TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek. As far as the sound goes, it’s not much changed from the days when Damn Damn Leash was on MTV2 every 15 minutes and tales of their shows at South by South West were passed around on forums as though folk lore. Of course, that was years ago, so the sound has slightly matured and the element of surprise has left her work, but if you liked Be Your Own Pet, you’re certainly going to like Jemina’s solo album. It’s just a bit sad that ‘Adventurers’ sounds like a more exciting prospect.
