Bloc Party at the moment seem to be a band that are falling apart. On top of drummer Matt Tong revealing that he’s unsure whether he will be returning to the band, now it’s been suggested that lead singer Kele may have plans outside the band. Following their recent sojourn around the british isles with Grammatics, the band are due to go on a hiatus – which also co-incides with the end of their record contract, if memory serves correct. Anyway, though there’s no official word from either Okerere or a record label, the NME is reporting that producer Hudson Mohawke told the BBC some news the other night:
“It hasn’t been finalised yet, but I’m doing a bit of stuff for Kele from Bloc Party’s solo album,” the producer said. “He’s doing a record with one of the guys from Spank Rock.”
In all honesty, if Bloc did split now, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise. There were interviews floating around a few years ago that suggested that Kele may be becoming hesitant of the music industry and it’s workings. Though a solo project means it’s inevitable he’d have to get back into the record/release/tour cycle, it’d be likely that he’d do it far more on his own terms. Either way, it means we’ve probably not seen the end of Okerere yet.
