Remember the New Rave scene from back in 2006? No? Well, that’s probably because it wasn’t a scene at all – it was just the NME telling everyone how good Klaxons were, which meant everybody decided that UV wasn’t completely disgusting again. And then it died again, before being reborn every time a bunch of boring, half-arsed students decide they want to dress up. Anyway, when magazines were desperately trying to forge a group of bands together to promote ad infinium, Shy Child were lumped in Hadouken! and the like to fill column inches, which was a pity – they always had a lot more talent and made music that had more character than their supposed contemporaries.
Fortunately, they’ve battled back from that and are now on the comeback trail, and have announced details of a new release. Following on from 2007’s ‘Noise won’t stop’, the band plan to release ‘Liquid Love’ on March 1st 2010. To celebrate this, the band are giving away a track from the album. Called ‘Criss Cross’, it’s 7 minutes long and it’s pretty good stuff. There’s a weird bit in there where there’s a phonecall sampled, which is probably just a cultural reference I don’t get. Anyway, it’s not New Rave, but it is dance inspired, but with more of a nod to MGMT than to ‘Atlantis to Interzone’.
