When a band has had two LPs out, it’s hard to feel like anything other than a bandwagon jumper when you start talking about how great they are. When they’ve had a legal battle over their name, you know that you’re pretty far behind. But maybe, just maybe, Teenage Cool Kids have just been missed by the masses? It’s in that spirit that this post comes to you. Despite having to go to court with The Cool Kids over their moniker, they’re still standing and, two records in, it sounds like they’re still making some pretty awesome music.
Their Wikipedia tells us that they’re a texan four-piece, but banish all notion of country inspired masterpieces – these guys make a sound noticably more garage rock inspired. It’d be easy to simply compare them to Les Savy Fav, but their sound is more like if LSF were consistently trying to make the perfect indie-pop tune. However, the shadow of the Now Yorkers looms large over this, in the most positive way imaginable. There’s a definite punk ethic in there, and at times it’s difficult to understand why there are only 2,500 last.fm members who’ve bothered to listen to this. Maybe it’s their record deal or a simple lack of promotion, but either way, this stuff deserves to be heard a lot more.
