God bless e-mail. For every tacky PR release I get about David Gray’s new single, there’s something worthwhile and exciting to sink my teeth into. well, that’s probably not a fair ratio at all, as the good/bad ratio is probably eering a lot more on the side of David Gray promos. But on a day like today, it’s easy to forget, as just now a little hypotehetical envelope popped through my imaginary postbox that blows all the bad away. There are a lot of amazing free mp3 services on the internet already, and places like Last.fm make getting music for nothing incredibly easy. However, the problem is finding stuff that you might actually like. Luckily for us, people like the ones who are running Beko are trying to change all that, and today they sent me over a little e-mail informing me about them.
You see, much like RCRD LBL before it, Beko are giving away selected MP3s from artists. The difference being that whilst RCRD LBL tend to mainly give away remixes and b-sides, Beko is a label that’s giving away actual, proper singles. That’s right – things with an a-side and a b-side, for your enjoyment. Of course, it’s all downloadable content rather than vinyls or whatever, but it’s still an incredibly regreshing approach. What’s more, it’s all actually really good stuff, too. Well, at least from the few tracks that I’ve downloaded so far anyway. The label seems to be focusing in on the experiemental/shoegaze market, which can only be good news for fans of great music. Current highlight is this weeks single by The Procedure Club, which sounds like The Pains of Being Pure at Heart being smothered in glorious, glorious fuzz. Expect a post on them in the near future.
There’s a new ‘single’ out every monday for you to download, and I’d recommend that you do your utmost to get yourself over there at least once a week to download the latest. Though the line-up so far is made up of relatively unknown names, they all seem to have one thing in common – they’re awesome and you haven’t heard of them. The website is promising something by the amazing Moscow Olympics in two weeks time, which is something I look forward to with baited breath. I’ve no idea how it’s being funded, no idea why it’s being done and no idea who it’s being done by, but it’s certainly one of the most exciting e-mails I’m likely to recieve each week.
Head over to the website, the chance of being dissatisfied is 0%.
