Gossip Girl is a television show famous for many thing. Number one, there’s the endless precession of mindlessly rich youths, running amok in their self absorbed, sheltered lives. Secondly, there’s a character who’s main line consists of ‘I’m Chuck Bass’. Thirdly, it’s got a pretty good taste in music, all in all. Any television show that has Sonic Youth come on and play a song has to be doing something right. So for Manchester’s Stickboy to have had his music on the show, in particular ‘Today’ on an episode ‘Waldorf must Pie’. I’m not quite sure what that means, but there’s a whole legion of viewers who probably do.
Anyway, when not making great songs, being featured on shows that broadcast to millions or doing spectacular things with other people’s songs (more on that later), Stickboy finds time to make songs in an outfit called Officer Owl – which, for starters, is almost the perfect band name. He and Ellen (from Ellen and the Escapades) make up the entirity of the band, and from the limited selection of songs on their myspace, it’s some beautiful stuff. It sounds like it’s been recorded at twilight in a wood, capturing some dreamlike state. If Garden State ever has sequel made (which we are all praying doesn’t happen, less it destroys all fondness for the original) then this is surely a shoo-in for taking the central piece of the soundtrack. There’s a hint of folk in amongst everything else, but it’s over-ridingly an excersize in taking your breath away. Marvelous.
Here’s a track by the duo. And, to sweeten the deal, there’s a remix of a Run Toto Run remix for you to get your hands on as well. Originally, this was going to feature on the Playlist that went up about a week ago, but in the end Plastic Gold by them made my heart ache just a little too much. If you’re searching for reasons to look forward to 2010, then Run Toto Run are certainly one of the most exciting bands destined to have exploded in 12 months time, and Stickboy’s interpretation of ‘Something to Say’ is wonderful. Enjoy:
