There’s always a sense of satisfaction when you beat everyone else to a band. Well, there is for me, at least. When it’s the other way round is the problem, especially when you think you’re onto something special. Beat! Beat! Beat! are the latest band to get sucked into this whirlpool of loathing and dishonesty, after a severe search of the ever-friendly elbo.ws threw me up their name. After listening to their songs on myspace, the toil felt worthwhile – they’re a bloody good band. Not only that, they’re also German – and any nationality other than the typical Anglo-American axis that seems to dominate this blog is always welcome. Okay, okay, they sing in English, but the entirity of their fanbase seems to speak the romantic language of Lothar Matthaus, which is always a plus.
Their music is an inspired mix of the catchy, riff-driven indie that brought 2003 to a standstill and the shoegaze that every new band on the block has suddenly become au fait with. They’re soon to tour around Europe with The Cinematics, and it’d be a pity if they didn’t soon translate that experience into a headline tour and bring the show over to the UK. Anyway, in search of an MP3 to justify this post, I came across a post by the NME, which meant that the days research could’ve been condensed into visiting the UK’s most popular ‘new’ music magazine’s website. They compare the band to Foals, which is a huge leap of imagination – whereas both clearly love a jittery, hyperactive base for a song, that’s about where the similarities end. Anyway, decide for yourself – here’s fireworks:
