Let’s all start a record label. We have no money and no idea how it would work, but still, let’s do it. My sum total of PR, marketing and record deals is nil, as I expect yours is, but let’s not let that get in the way. Of course, we’ll all lose a lot of money by spending all of our earnings on Tesco Value CDs and the artwork will look like it’s been done by a child because I can’t draw, but maybe that will add to the charm? For talent, we won’t go to gigs or wait for CD-Rs to drop through the letterbox like normal people would, we’ll simply scour last.fm and go myspace trawling for artists that sound awesome, like False Jesii.
In two self-released EPs, Daniel Morrisson has pretty much managed to alter the perception of what a noise-pop song should be. Well, he has for the few people that have heard his take on the genre. All the songs that I’ve managed to get a hold of are under 3 minutes long, with most barely scratching the 2 minute mark. But they don’t beg for your attention in the way you’d expect such short, sharp bursts to do. They manage to make themselves some kind of depth rather than being throwaway, and it takes repeat listens to actually get a hold upon the tracks. ‘The Morning Sun’, for instance, seems much grander than it’s 2 minutes and 37 seconds suggest, and offer a tender take upon a style of music that’s often brash and nothing else.
What’s most interesting is the fact that the distortion upon the tracks seem more a purposeful effect rather than poor production. in fact, it’s only really the vocals that come out of this fuzzy, whereas the guitar thuds along with clarity and purpose. If you’re a fan of Ducktails and Times New Viking and you’ve ever thought ‘I would really quite like to hear what it would be like if those two bands got merged into one man’, then you might like this. I don’t really know what else to say, except that when artists like False Jesii can release their own work, then it’s probably best we don’t get involved with our imaginary record label.
