Listening to music, there’s quite a large proportion of the time spent wondering what on earth you are doing with your life, especially when you’re listening to unsigned stuff. Then there are the occassions when you feel like you’ve been living underneath the most boring rock in the world for the past couple of months. one time I went out to a terrible local club, and inbetween the usual mix of Oasis and The fucking Verve or something, there was a song that I’d never heard before, but all these weekend rockstars were pumping their fist and yelping along in joy anyway. Turned out that it was Vampire Weekend. God, I felt bad for the rest of that week.
It’s not on the same scale as that faux pas, but it feels like it. Lauren from This Many Boyfriends recently turned me to a band called Sleigh Bells. They’ve only put out one EP, 2HELLWU, and it’s spectacular. they’ve only got 4,000 listeners on last.fm, but you might as well jump on the band wagon whilst you still can. Contrary to the thoughts of sub-par singers wailing out Christmas Carols, they’re treading similar ground to another 2010 hopeful, Zambri. But then again, maybe that’s just me being terrible at comparisons, as there’s more of a slant towards M.I.A.’s singing than the power-pop that Zambri’s ‘Bang for Changes’ EP was, and it all sounds like Crystal Castles doing a good remix of an awesome song. They’re comprised of Derek Miller and Alexis Kraus, and if it doesn’t work out for them as a band, there’s definitely a burgeoning career in production due for them given the quality of this self-made EP. Massively excited to see what comes next from them, but in the mean time, here’s something from 2HELLWU:
