Just a few thoughts whilst I’m out here i the middle of a bloody desert with an Internet connection that’s from 1980 rather than 2010, but that’s okay.
After a few inital reservations, Los Campesinos! album is far better than anything else they’ve done, and I agree with Gareth when he says that it’s unquestionably their best album yet. Where We are Beautiful, We are Doomed laid the foundation for their escape from twee-indie-pop, this completes the breakout, and being able to watch a band come into their own is a real pleasure. It actually feels like the listener is growing up with the band, from the musical elitism of late teens in ‘You, Me, Dancing!’, to the desperation and heartbreak of pretty much everything on their new album.
Standout track is unquestionably ‘Letters from me to Charlotte’, or whatever it’s long name is – possibly topping even ‘Knee Deep at ATP’ in it’s scope and depth, a previously unthinkable task. Either way, it’s the soundtrack to my morning run, going to sleep and everything in between.
Secondly, I’m missing gigs – I mean, really issing them. I miss reading about this, I miss hearing about upcoming ones, and most of all, I’m missing Vivian Girls, Internet Forever and a load of other amazing bands that I love play Manchester. These Inidan kids that I’m teaching better bloody need it, otherwise I’m going to force them to form some kind of shitty lo-fi group just so I can be the first in the world to hear them.
Thirdly – I’m out of the loop. It’s been about a week, but I already feel almost criminally behind. Which is where I need your. If you find a nice, new, unsigned band, then please, please, please send me an MP# and a few words about them. I won’t really be able to listen, but it’ll make me feel a bit better when I come home around Easter and I’m not too far behind.
Most of all, I miss my girlfriend, I miss my family and I miss not having curry every meal. But I also really miss writing this fucking thing, which sounds pathetic. But I hope you’re all well, and I’ll try post something again before March.
By then, I’ll probably be into some shitty Indian scene.
