Sometimes it’s difficult to do your bit for charity, having to harass people for money they owe you for sponsoring a 10k run is nobody’s idea of fun, let alone the prospect of actually competing in the thing. So when doing something ‘good’ in the moral sense of the word and doing something ‘good’ in terms of quality combine, it’s best that you snap it up. Nedry are yet to play the city of Manchester, which is a pity for all fans of thick bass and overpoweringly beautiful vocals around the city. However, they’ll soon be breaking their duck in the Contact theatre thanks to CTRL+ALT+SHIFT and Mind on Fire collaborating for one of the most promising nights in recent memory.
Tickets are just £3 before 10.30pm and an extra pound afterwards with absolutely all profit going towards CTRL+ALT+SHIFT’s own Haiti appeal, but there’s also a theme to the evening. In between performances from some of the city’s most promising underground collectives in the shape of live art by oneeightfive, The Breadwinners and In the Loop, there will be screenings of short films loosely based on the obstacles surrounding those trying to get out of poverty. They’ve got selections including Martin Freeman (from every British comedy ever and The Office) and Julian Barrett (The Mighty Boosh), so at least you’re guaranteed something better than whatever Comic Relief usually do.
Even if you’re averse to helping out a Charity, there’s no excuse to miss out on Nedry. Their debut album was re-released by Monotreme after getting plaudits all across the board and there are very few bands about that are comparable to what they do. It’s a swirling mixture of influences, coming across like Portishead trying their hands at dubstep. That there’s no-one else out there doing this is bad, but that so few people have picked up on Nedry is a sin. Don’t miss your chance to see them in the flesh whilst you can still get change from a fiver whilst doing so.
