Waking up the morning to a cup of tea is a good morning for most. Waking up to one of the best bands of this millenium giving away a free track, then, is out of this world. After months of yearning and angst from the fans, they’ve finally started their walk down the comeback trail. Whilst they upset a few people by supporting the eternally bland U2 on a current US mega-tour and the Julian Plenti side-project was a worthwhile sideproject, it only increased the need for the main course.
Unveiled this morning, Lights is the first track from Interpol’s new album. At over 5 minutes long, it’s slow, dark and melodic, taking it’s time to build up to Smith’s usual ponderous vocals. This is more ‘Hands Away’ than ‘Evil’, and isn’t exactly the most obvious giveaway track, but it’s at least an indication of the band’s current direction, which appears to be a skewed version of their original sound. Anyway, enough words – download it and have a listen for yourself.
