It might be a pretty much defunct concept now, but the easiest way to gauge what a band are like without actually having to listen to their stuff is to have a quick look at their myspace layout. Some of them read like personal ads, desperately pleading with the viewer to do this and that for them, begging you to like their music and bragging how they were once played on a radio show, others overload you with youtube videos and flash plug-ins. Lester Brown’s has a startled cat as his influences, which is more than enough to pique anyone’s interest.
Cats aside, Brown (if the wonderfully plain moniker is in fact his real name) is superb. His influences are more likely in the Ariel Pink spectrum than the feline in the chilled out grooves that he weaves and the out of focus vocals he partners with him. It’s bizarre that in music today that an artist not piling fuzz upon a recording can be considered brave for doing so, but that’s how it feels throughout his Islomania EP. Coming out of Toronto, he labels himself as ‘chillwave’, which sounds horribly close to the ‘glo-fi’ moniker that people have so desperately been trying to stick upon the likes of Washed Out. There’s certainly balaeric inspired beats throughout the 7 tracks, gloriously warped and edging on glitchy. It’s halfway between daydream and a dawning realisation and you could imagine the likes of Vice magazine absolutely lapping it up.
The EP is free and is easily one of the most impressive unsolicited emails I’m ever likely to recieve. Enjoy:
