If you’re starting a band and you’re actually decent,. the last thing you want to do is start playing all these academy unsigned nights that are floating about. It’s not about getting your music to people – it’s about getting it to the right people. So the news that Mammal Club were pulling out of a gig including the might of Boy or Bison and Cats in Paris. A variety of tangled leads might’ve meant that the latter didn’t get to play in the end, which meant that boy or Bison essentially ended up headlining.
despite having one of the most impressive band names about, Mammal Club only have one track available at the minute (and a remix of it), but it’s bloody good. And they’re built from fine stock as well, featuring members of the Eye Jab and Yourcodenameis:milo. ‘Put your fears in order’ is a 5 minute mini masterpiece, having a similar sound to recent chart botherers Delphic. The track is awash with faux-balaeric beats, jittery keyboard and an awkward falsetto croon, taking it’s own time in building up to an angry, frenetic breakdown halfway through the track. the remix is equally brilliant, and it’s a shame that their MySpace doesn’t have more up, to be honest, as it looks like there’s yet another great band about to emerge from the North-East’s bustling music scene. Fittingly, they’ve also shared a stage with some of Sunderland’s greatest musical sons in The Futureheads
If you live in Newcastle, you’re in luck – they’ve got two dates coming up in the city (29 May – The Cluny, 31st May – Evolution festival), whilst the unusual locale of The Font bar will play host to them on the 30th May in Manchester. Personally, I can’t wait to hear what else they’re up to.
