Either making eerie, atmospheric electronic music has gotten a lot easier to do or The Knife can lay claim to being one of the biggest influences on modern music around. In fact, it barely matters when the end result is a slew of bands making music as great as they are at the minute. Crystal castles are currently at the fore, having broken onto the scene a few years back with their unique approach to sampling and passionate vocals from Alice Glass. Whilst their second record might not be breaking down as many doors the first, that’s probably due to the amount of bands around them doing work as groundbreaking as what they achieved back in 2008. Whilst there are many imitators, one of the few acts who seem to be doing something genuinely exciting are White Ring.
Describing themselves as a ‘trance-inspired duo’, they’re based in New York and have been going since the turn of the millenium. it was only 2 or so years ago that they took a proper form and started pumping out songs – which has culminated in them sharing a release with the consistently brilliant oOoOO. Their music has been described as ‘witch house’, which is oddly fitting, given the chilling, icy distance that they manage to fit into the song, as if it’s all being conducted through the haze of a dry ice machine. if this was being made over this side of the atlantic, it’s likely they’ve have covered the whole thing in the dubstep wobble bass, increasingly becoming just as much the mark of the untalented as of innovation. Thankfully, the result borders of a mystical kind of euphoria rather than feeling like the dirty back alleys of inner city housing.
They’ve got an EP coming out sometime soon, if it’s not out already, on Disaro. it should be amazing.
