Sometimes people make things seem so simple that you wonder why everyone else struggles sop hard with a concept. Amongst the millions of bands around, there are only a few that are actually anything other than derivative drudge, and of that small minority, there’s Teen Daze. Oh god, Teen Daze. To hear his cover of Washed Out’s ‘New Theory’ is to fall in love, all neon beats and vivid, luminous noises, as opposed to the jaded (but equally brilliant) original. The Balearic influence is key to this, but it has been for so many others that have simply failed to make it work. however, in these hands it’s nothing short of the euphoric revelation that it should be. Friendly Fires have been one of the main beneficiaries of this swing back towards dance in recent years, but aside from ‘Paris’, their material seems hopelessly diluted when compared to the lucid rhythm on show here.
Most impressive is the single minded approach brought to each track. Whether it’s his own work or a remix of someone elses, the outcome is always something unmistakably Teen Daze. The chillwave tag has been bandied about as it invariably does for anything that sounds vaguely atmospheric at the minute, but the name implies a sort of passivity that these noises simply do not possess. Shine on you crazy white cap has been the track that has gained the most exposure, but it’s Around that most grabs the attention. Like disco fed through a NES, it’s infectious, bombastic and utterly brilliant. EP ‘Four More Years’ may not have a physical release date yet, but it’s already available for digital download, which will be more than enough to get by on until a long player is pumped out in all it’s energetic, shimmering glory.
