If you’re a lonely boy alone in a bedroom, the thing to do is make music on your laptop. If their are five of your, however, the only solution is to make a garage rock band, which is exactly what The Rent boys have been doing for the past year or so, and doing it well. Sex is Disgusting have mentioned that they’d like to put out some of their stuff, which is about as high of a compliment as you can receive in these days of boutique labels and limited edition, small scale, one off prints done exclusively on betamax or whatever. tomorrow, they’ll be sharing a stage with Brown Brogues, The Graveyard Shift and Cargo Cult at The Corner in Fallowfield.
If you’re familiar with any of the bands in that line-up, you probably know what to expect. This is raw, visceral, distorted and utterly brilliant. It’d be tempting to say there’s some Iggy Pop in their sound if his name wasn’t no synonymous with car insurance, but this is much harder than pretty much everything he and the Stooges ever put out anyway. Admission to tomorrow’s gig is £2 before 10 o’clock and an extra pound afterwards, which still only works out at about 75p a band. Expect yelps, frenetic drumming and pounding, fuzzy bass, which are pretty much all anybody needs to be decent any more. They already sound like they should be sandwiched in the middle of a really good mixtape, in between Black Lips and Nobunny. Expect the cassette vanity labels to be swarming all over them any time now.
