Some people spend a lifetime mastering and recycling one sound, occasionally to huge financial gain. It seems that Brandon Biondo can barely an EP without reaching the pinaccle of one genre and leaping to the next. Having conquered the hipster charts over the summer with his band Coolrunnings, he’s come straight back with another proect gloriously inconsistent in it’s focus. Entitled Walsh, the work is broad and breathtaking, ranging from the bombastic daring of standout track ‘Days of Thunder’ to a more chilled, ambient feel with other efforts, and encompassing all inbetween. Indeed, the only common theme is that the tracks are always engaging and boundary pushing – pitched somewhere between chillwave and the massively atmospheric Witch House scene, without shying from the melodic riffs that both usually eschew.
What Biondo is going to do next is anybody’s guess – he’s already helped create a library of killer tracks that puts the competition to shame. A lot of infoluence is taken from the hip-hop scene and it’d be great to hear him delve a bit further into that side of the spectrum, but it genuinely feels like he’s done enough to retire already – even if he certainly doesn’t have the money to do so.
