Between the 13th – 15th of October, Manchester plays host to the annual In the City festival. This year, it’s relocating to the Northern Quarter, and looks set to play host to the most exciting line-up in years, giving both the industry professionals and the normal gig goers a chance to get involved with it’s unique mix of exciting concerts and engaging keynote speakers. Wristbands are currently priced at £29, which gets you access to some of the best shows the city will see this year. If you’re not quite sure who to see yet, here’s some help:
They’ve been described as sounding like the apocalypse and, to be fair, that doesn’t even come close. HEALTH loosely fit into the noise rock genre, but being one of the most influential bands to come out of LA’s legendary all-ages, alcohol free venue The Smell (along with fellow In The City act No Age), to keep them so tightly pigeon holed would be an injustice. They meld countless genres, most pointedly incorporating some of the more forward thinking aspects of modern dance music, achieving the mix so effortlessly that it’s almost insulting.
There are so few similar contemporaries to take reference from that no description can truly encapsulate their sound – a more otherworldly take on Cold Cave, perhaps, or more aggressive Crystal Castles, who themselves covered HEALTH’s track ‘Crimewave’ and will tour with the band later in the year. Whilst their various releases have received rave reviews – with 2009’s Get Colour undoubtedly being one of the best releases of the year – it’s unsurprising that a band that harnessed their sound and gained notoriety through early shows should be so thrilling live. Whilst their recorded material sounds earth shattering yet crystalline, in the flesh they’re urgent and filled with a sense of foreboding, the band seemingly moving in slow motion as their racket thumps on, breathless.
They might be unrelentingly futuristic, but it’s very much doubtful that the future will throw up aqnyone even in the same realm as HEALTH. They’ve have videos banned from youtube, created an unshakable masterpiece in single ‘Die Slow’ and are almost certainly peerless – if you want to see their In the city performance, it’s probably best getting there early.
