It was previously thought that promising bands simply went on to work in Starbucks or other low-paid jobs when they split up. But it seems that some members of former hot new bands of tomorrow have their sights slightly higher than a customer-facing role in caffeine supply – namely aiming for musical stardom again. Lonely Galaxy is the project of a man who has already seen his musical dreams thrown upon the scrapheap once already, having played in nearly-man outfit Video Nasties for around 4 years. Now alone, Harry Howell’s second attempt to scale the dizzying heights of musical stardom are, understandably, a little bit more measured than all that came before it.
support dates with Perfume Genius are forthcoming, and that alone says enough about the kind of music Howell produces, the tracks filled with a self awareness tenderness and beauty that feeds in on itself, a concious torturing of his own self over the backdrop of a twinkling, subdued arrangement. Low key and sultry, it’s not quite the akward warts and all of his future tourmate, it’s still a world away from the twin vices of the being a solo artists: singer-songwriting and chillwave. There’s enough nous within the songs for their to be distance, and there’s a lot in common with Lightspeed Champion in the mannerisms of the pieces, if a world of difference in their delivery.
