There was a time when throwing a few catchy guitar riffs and a decent haircut together could pretty much ensure you a record deal. But in these times of rapidly diminishing margins and ever smaller measures of success, the humble guitar has been exchanged with the synth, the haircuts with hastily edited band pictures and a 2 album contract with a bit of expowsure on the internet. So whilst Yung Life might have very little realistic chance of making any money, they can be assured of at least a few kind words from around the internet with their bombastic take on the electronic heights of 80’s pop.
Coming straight out of Knoxville, the duo might not know much about correct spelling, but they at least know how to throw a decent tune together, coming out on top with their fight to make the casio sound euphoric. It’s probably chillwave’s greatest victory that anything that even remotely sounds atmospheric, jaded and synthesised is lumped in with the genre, but Washed Out probably isn’t happy that two boys from Tennessee are making music just as engaging as himself. And there’s a great sign of those dimished margins for you: that bands might actually strive to be the almost certainly penniless Ernest Greene – though being poor with dignity is always favourable to being rich and in Jet.
