If the term ‘supergroup’ felt a bit shaky when the major players of dubstep came together to came Magnetic Man, then it is positively alien to Seeing Suge. A collaboration between UK beat chopper Star Slinger, San Fran chillwave king Blackbird Blackbird and Quebec rapper Emay, it’s three corners of the world coming together to make something stunning. There’s a sense that this is something that could be described as ‘cutting edge’ and ‘next level’ by someone that way inclined, with the three artists putting together their crystalline beats through their respective broadband connections – even if these kind of collaborations have been dreamt about since the days modems were clicking away in darkened corners of our homes.
But whilst the execution is wonderful, it doesn’t come close to the music itself. Chillwave’s fan base is one that is largely white and middle class, but this is proof more than every that there’s a hair’s breadth between itself and the more languid moments of hip hop, as Starslinger’s warped beats and Blackbird Blackbird’s ghostly backing vocals provide the perfect foil for Emay’s slick rhymes. Their output is limited to one track on forthcoming album Collaborations, and if they stop now, they’ll have a 100% hit rate, their breathtaking track ‘Breaking’ effortlessly embodying cool. For our sake, we can only hope that it’s not a one off.
