Though in real life it is fashionable to turn up late to the party, when it comes to music, it’s safest to jump on the bandwagon as early as possible. And though Gem Club’s supporters number in the thousands already, it’s doubtful that the duo’s rise has been stunted just yet. Making beautiful music with a piano is rarely going to be out of fashion, but this year it has seen somewhat of a revival thanks to the prominence of the life affirmingly downbeat Perfume Genius and his jaw dropping album ‘Learning’.
Links between the two would be easy to make – their stripped back, voice and simplistic piano being a very attractive prospect – but it’s the breathing space within each of their sounds that makes for such different listening. Made up of Christopher Barnes and Kristen Drymala, the two eschew the overly twee approach of other boy/girl bands in favour of a sound that could modestly be described as intimate. The beauty of the songs rests on the bravery at their core, the lack of electronic enhancement or tweaking means leaves nowhere to hide, a vacuum that their individual talents are more than able to fill. Perhaps one day you’ll catch your mother listening to them.
