It’s always a sad point in a movement when you can start applying the ‘post-‘ tag to it. Chillwave has barely had a season in the sun and we’re already at that moment, with the advent of bands taking the subdued electronic beeps of there earlier-in-the-year predecessors and making something markedly different. Not much is known about Lantern Festival, but that’s less a marketing campaign and more the fact that there are only 19 plays on myspace and that nobody has really bothered to look into it too much yet.
The artist himself claims to be from Beijing, but that’s more likely to be a play on one of the two tracks currently available for streaming being named Bamboo Babies, a track that suppresses sparkle, plinking and twinkling along on it’s merry little way. The other, Mutual Crush, is a poppier affair, daring to mention dirty texts as if they’re a normal, acceptable occurrence. Perhaps where it moves on from the likes of Washed Out is the fact that this is more straightforward in it’s approach, the reverb and distortion kept to a minimum whilst still refraining from the bombastic. If he can keep up this kind of quality, maybe one day there will be a hipster runoff genre that the band can call their own.
