There’s more than a touch of pomposity about Dubai as a city – the ostentatious spending, the forced ambience, the false veneer that seems to coat everything that stems from the area. Perhaps that’s why the place is a perfect match for a witch house outfit treading remarkably similar ground. Dubai Horizon output is thus far limited to 5 tracks released through a garish tumblr account, all of which run for a lengthy 8 minutes and 28 seconds, an uneventful but somehow arresting meander through a underworld of half-forgotten sound
Whilst many contemporaries burst and bristle with atmosphere and the hard-hitting percussion, these tracks seem to purposely avoid a focus point or punchline – they lingering around the same points without ever reaching a truly fulfilling conclusion. That said, there’s still a lot to appreciate in these masses of noise. It’s a form of hypnosis, inviting you to wallow in the same expanses of nothingness, to let these waves of sound wash over and engulf you. It’s a difficult ask, and it’s unlikely that this will ever garner it’s creator the kind of riches that have befallen those who’ve repatriated to the soulless capital of the U.A.E., but there’s a lot to be admired in someone investing time and energy in something so overtly unviable.
