There are certain clichés that come with writing a blog. One of them is that you’re sat in a bedroom at your parent’s house, typing away because you’re unemployed with nothing to do. Another is that you’re simply an aspiring writer, hoping to get ahead in a business by writing these pathetic little missives in the vague hope that someone with power will see them and whisk you away on a yacht or something. Perhaps the most prominent of our times is that a blog will, inevitably move in to being a record label at some point. In order to complete the stereotype, The Pigeon Post is now moving into putting out a series of EPs by some of the favourite bands ever featured on these pages. Even worse, it’s going to be a cassette label, called Ducktapes.
It’s not all that bad though. The tapes themselves are all second hand, bought from a variety of charity shops and jumble sales from the recesses of people’s bric-a-brac. Therefore, predictably, the releases are all going to be limited, but massively so. Whilst the EPs will all be available to download online for the token price of £1 each, there will be one physical copy of each made available to buy – the only copy ever to be made, available for purchase at £10. Completely unique, the profits from each sale will be given to charity, too – suggestions as to which are gladly accepted. Also, if you buy a tape, you’ll automatically get a download link for every future Ducktapes release sent directly to your inbox.
But that’s enough about the label itself and on to the first tape. It is an honour to announce that the first 28 minutes of music put out on the imprint will be from Leeds electronica duo worriedaboutsatan. Having been about since 2005, the two have spent the past few years fusing post-rock with IDM to make some of the most impressive noises to come out of the UK scene. Ridiculously prolific, they’ve recently given away an entire album of material in conjunction with The Line of Best Fit, but still had enough in the tank to put out this ambient half hour. Featuring previously unreleased tracks, a few oldies and the massively hyped remix of White Hinterland’s ‘Icarus’, it’s a varied mixture of material that exposes just how criminally underrated they are. The tape is available to purchase now, and the EP is up for download too.
The next ducktapes release should be coming up in the next couple of weeks.
I just tried to buy it, but it keeps telling me there is an error with my PayPal. I’ve sent you an email, so I hope we can correct this error.
I call dibs on the cassette!! 😦
Got it! Thanks for clearing that up. Good thing I don’t sleep… you snooze you lose. 🙂
[…] a short introduction to the label on Matthew’s blog here, and you can follow him on twitter […]
This is so, so great Matthew. Especially the fact that all profits go to charity!
