Perhaps the key to being a ‘buzzband’ is making sure that never, in any circumstance, are you going to make money from your music. Well, maybe it’s the acknowledgement of that fact, given that there are plenty of ska-pop bands still beating the boards at battle of the band competitions who, we can only hope, will never make a penny from their endeavours. Either way, despite how unsustainable their career choice might be, that won’t stop Headless Horseman putting out their EP ‘5 songs’ on bandcamp and charging $5 for it. Labelled as horrorcore by some well meaning but ultimately off target souls on last.fm, the duo claim to have both been born on Halloween but make music than twinkles rather than forebodes.
It’s obviously got some cache too, given that pretty much every person who has ever written a blog seems to be hot on their case, but that’s with good reason. You won’t ever hear this on primetime radio, or have your friends dancing to it at the local club night, but their an eerie tenderness to what they’ve created, their racket predictably subdued and distorted. This isn’t a band that seeks to overwhelm you, but to build up and release, the instrumentation only slightly more important than the space that it allows itself to breathe. Their might not be a lucrative career at the end of it for them, but it’s definitely worth the $5 they’re asking for it – and maybe that’ll get them a sandwich or something until offers from Taco Bell start to roll in.
