One of the internet’s greatest gifts is that it’s now possible to be a superstar no matter where you live, as long as you’ve got a web connection and some talent. Equally, it means that you can also enjoy the delights of being a hipster no matter you location. Pitched somewhere between though ideals are Glass Vaults, a twosome shooting up from Wellington, new Zealand, and sounding like one of the more refreshing takes on the whole ambient scene you’re likely to hear.
When not filling their MySpace with faded, poloroid-style nostalgic pictures, the duo make tracks that should probably be described as understated. Teaming up some pretty simplistic drum machine beats with a few layers of samples and some ambiguous vocals, it’s almost as if they’ve purposely set out to make a sound reminiscent of putting your head underwater in a bath. Either way, it works, making something actually interesting out of the chillwave’s hollowed out carcass whilst the rest of us simply gawp.
