Ryan Soloman is a man who you can pretty guarantee is pasty white and middle class, putting together tunes under the name Nature’s Kid in a bedroom his parents have long since wished he’d moved out of. But rather than creating the beats that make up his glitchy tracks, he decided to ensure he could only take samples from the tracks within his music library in the making of his second album ‘Loops’
The results are nowhere near as terrible as you might expect, nor as obvious – whilst Nike7Up has turned the mash-up into an art form, Soloman uses them as a palate rather than a framework. There are large parts of the 12 track free download album that fade into the forgettable, but those that shine are supreme – the warped mastery of Play in the Sheets is notable, particularly. The end results are largely unrecognisable from what came before them, though with a lazy use of a Teenage Dirtbag and the nicking some LCD Soundsystem feel out of place in an album largely about experimenting and testing boundaries. Hopefully at some point he’ll invest in a micro-Korg and we can all be happy.
