It’s difficult to know whether you should be overjoyed or depressed at the fact that all the best new music sounds like it could’ve been made during the late 90’s somewhere in the Balearic islands. Chillwave and it’s sub Ibiza-aping ways may have died down somewhat, but the baton has been passed on to the generation of 2011, who take the big, glowing beats and shimmering electro and have it played at 3 quarter speed on an old, dying computer, struggling under the strain of having two programs running at once. Thankfully, Antwerp’s music is a world away from the saccharine tones of glitch pop, whilst possessing the kind of emotional depth that listeners of Galaxy Radio don’t even know exist.
In fairness, BBC Sound of 2010 longlister Gold Panda is going to be making more waves in the following calendar year than the modest ripples he’s achieved this year, and his influence is all over the few tracks Antwerp has made available online. There’s an energy at it’s core, a desperation show off the multitude of ideas that make up the swelling body of work that will get people dancing. Overwhelmingly, there’s a sense that isn’t a talent raw, but one already fine tuned and being honed, the nuances of the noises made a tell tale sign of a genius beneath. Let’s hope Radio 1 doesn’t get their hands on him for quite a while yet.
