Nurtured in Florida’s West Palm Beach, Judson Rodgers has had long enough to perfect his sound. With his MySpace set up in late 2006, it’s been a long wait, but this current burst of brilliance from the prodigious talent makes it all worthwhile. Recording under the name Sumsun, the sound is one stolen from the tropics, twinkling and bright, whilst similarly steeped in the grime of urban life. It’s beauty is almost unremitting, a celebratory snapshot taking 3 and a half glorious minutes to unfold.
If Mi Ami spent less time trying to fuck with your head and spent more trying to make you want to dance, then they might want to use this as a blueprint. Debut EP Samo Milagro is out now through Leaving Records, and there must surely be a raft of littlelabels beating down Rodger’s door for the next limited run release. This is the backing music to every 80’s workout VHS ever made taken, jazzed up and made into a noise-rock classic.
