The chances of picking a bad band name are becoming slimmer by the week, as bands slowly learn a formula that is likely to make them stick out in an inbox full of their contemporaries. Gavin Elstad, however, hasn’t read the memo. Living in Ireland, his chosen band name can either be read as a bizarre statement of intent or as an incredibly weak pun about the man who murdered Sweet Home Alabama. Adultrock isn’t really the kind of name that you want emblazoned on a t-shirt, nor the kind of moniker you could ever imagine making a smooth transition into the mainstream – something matched by his music.
Whilst the name hints at the kind of shimmering electro-pop band that only seems to live on Myspace, the eponymous EP sounds more like a really good record being listened to through a wall – muffled but still brilliant. There’s almost an unfinished quality to the work – the rise of the bedroom producer has seen more than enough bands make it without a vocalist, but unlike Gold Panda and his ken, there isn’t quite the pointed direction in the pieces. Still, it’s wonderful to hear Elstad wonder, stumbling from sound to sound with eyes presumably glazed, the weight of the world far away. It’s only a matter of time before this is being fed back to you through a Beko-DSL download.
