Among the many things that Oxford finds itself linked with – dictionaries, lower league football, the Harry Potter films amongst many others – it’s seems that, just as it will never be able to shrug off it’s links with the university, it’s unlikely that the intrinsic bonds with forward thinking pop music. Young Athletes League claim to have come together from small villages around the city to make the latest chapter in the conurbation’s long list of exciting, boundary pushing talents.
The joy comes from trying to pin them down, to understand quite what they’re trying to achieve. Just as soundcloud plays you a jittery, synth pop answer to the math rock of Foals, the duo change direction and produce the kind of dirty electronica that a legion of Crystal Castles wannabes would love to have as the backing track to their attempts at mimicking Alice Glass before setting their sights even further afield with a remix that sounds half witch house, half 80’s revival synth and wholly brilliant. There’s the chance that the twosome haven’t found their direction, but with so many to choose from, it’s more likely that they’re just biding their time to see which will get the minor indies squabbling over them quickest.
