Pretty much everyone with a modicum of knowledge of music will know who Deerhunter are. One of the most important and influential bands of the past decade, not only have they spawned thousands of similar acts, they’ve also managed to push the boundaries of sound with their own solo projects, too. Prodigiously talented whilst also managing to be utterly prolific, the band have managed to carve a niche with their own racket. they describe it as ‘ambient punk’ apparently, but there’s no language too hyperbolic to describe most of their works, falling into so many different genres and encompassing so many baffling sounds that it barely makes sense to try and pigeonhole them. Latest album Halcyon digest manages to go where Weird Era Cont., Cryptograms and Microcastle went before it in being both profoundly beautiful and noisily innovative.
Anyway, the band are coming to Manchester, and if you’ve heard of them but never managed to see them live before, now’s your chance. On March 30th, the band will be playing Soundcontrol with support coming from Lower Dens. Famously emphatic live, this is one of the few times in which an experimental, forward thinking band actually manage to take it up a level when they’re playing in the flesh. Even if you can’t afford the ticket price, there’s no excuse – Now Wave are giving away a pair of tickets to see the band, and for your chance all you have to do is answer the question below:
Which Manchester band take their name from a Deerhunter album?
a) WU LYF
b) Christian AIDS
c) Weird Era
