The problem with most lyrics is that they’re simply poems that aren’t good enough to stand alone. and if you’re making music as beautiful as Pine Gatherings, it doesn’t really need furnishing with them anyway. Coming out of Belgium, little is know about this artist – or band as it might be – but that’s almost against the point. From the three tracks streaming through bandcamp at the moment, not one (at the time of writing) has been given a Facebook ‘like’ – presumably anyone who has been privileged enough to let these dreamy, layered tracks drift across them has been too dumbstruck to be bothered by the constraints of social media.
Of the three, it’s the latest effort ‘It Fits’ that is most bewitching, a kind of prototype, tongue tied Porcelain Raft track that weaves in and out of itself, a crocheted masterpiece of interlocking riffs, looped over the top of one another. It’s a glorious, subdued creshendo – the aural equivalent of the sun setting on a particularly great day without needing the excessive reverb that anyone else in 2011 seems to use as a crutch. You get the impression that this is the work of a reclusive genius – hope, even. Either way, it’s absolutely wonderful.[bandcamp: shortcode must include 'track', 'album', or 'video' param]
