We’re all well aware of how similar all of this kind of music sounds to the untrained ear – in fact, even to one heavily educated in the nuances of chillwave, it’s often difficult to tell them apart. But as anyone in the bottom music set at school will tell you, making decent music isn’t easy no matter how much fancy equipment you’ve got in front of you. So whilst a few samples and a quick voice recording through a built-in speaker on a mac are pretty much a flat-pack glo-fi track,. it still takes some skilled hands to assemble them.
You get the feeling, though, that Sternway probably aren’t as impressed by their own work as some of the smugger sections of the emerging electronic scene. Labelling their own music as ‘bullshit’ is a hint to start with, and the fact that their one and only track has the feeling of something hastily cut-and-pasted together doesn’t particularly help either, but when you’re given 3 minutes of music as woozy and intoxicating as ‘Kick Hop’ clearly is, those inhibitions go out of the window. This could’ve been made by any one of thousands of bedroom producers across the globe, but the glimpse of one-off talent has never been what all this reverb-ed out pop music has been about anyway. You might not remember the band’s name this time next week, but that breezy melody should stick in your head a lot longer.
