Who’d have thought that Egyptian Hip Hop could be classed as influential already? Aviaries have been around forever under various different guises, it seems, but now seem to have settled upon a name, coupled with a sound reminiscent of the melodic, pysche musings of Manchester’s young creative collective. Perhaps the sound is a little bit more pointed than that – there are hints, somewhat bizarrely, of Enter Shakiri in amongst all of the racket – with the vocals alternating between the endearingly off kilter and faux-tribal. God knows what they’re aiming for, but Hydrology is an EP that manages, at least, to hold the attention, in all it’s expansive, tepid mess. They’re playing Live at Leeds which is a set that should be worth checking out, as long as it doesn’t clash with Breton.
