Jazz: the only thing certain to get more of a groan from a music class of schoolchildren than Beethoven and a genre certain to get a token Mercury Music Award nomination and still get overlooked. Portico Quartet were the ones to take fill the void back in 2008 with their album ‘Knee Deep in the North Sea’, and three years on two of the outfit have branched out into making sexy, dark electronica. It should come as no surprise that two highly qualified, talented musicians should be able to better what hordes of unemployed nobodies with macbooks manage to achieve, but their eponymous debut EP is there to silence any doubters. Some of it is too cerebral to lose your shit to, but Mirrors & Monuments truly makes up for that. Someone hire them a soul singer, get Star Slinger to do a remix and we’re done for the year.
